Mirik resident Nirupam Shama contributes to India’s triumph with Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission

DARJEELING,: Mirik is basking in pride and joy as local resident Nirupam Shama, an ISRO scientist, was part of the successful Chandrayaan-3 mission.

India scripted history by successfully landing Chandrayaan-3 on the lunar surface on Wednesday evening. With the lander accomplishing a soft landing on the moon, India became the fourth country in the world to achieve this feat and the only country to land on the lunar south pole.

Nirupam’s family, who reside in Mirik’s Okayti, expressed their happiness and pride in his accomplishment. His father, Bishwa Kavi Sharma, mentioned that they were proud of him just as they were when he got his appointment at ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) in 2017.

Nirupam, who calls his family every night, maintained secrecy about the Chandrayaan-3, citing its sensitive nature and the previous failures of similar missions.

“Yesterday after the mission was a success, he called us and asked me if I had seen it on television,” Sharma said adding that he would never have missed it.

Sharma informed that they plan to celebrate Nirupam’s achievement with a get-together at their home. He also encouraged parents to support their children in education and highlighted the importance of hard work and determination in achieving one’s goals.

Nirupam has volunteered to guide others interested in his field, demonstrating his willingness to share his knowledge.

Nirupam’s mother, Bishnu Kala Sharma, expressed her happiness for her son's success and noted that he had achieved his childhood dreams.

Nirupam, who is in his mid-twenties, pursued his education at the National Institute of Technology and then became a scientist at ISRO, India's premier space technology institution.
