New education policy to focus on happiness, curiosity and compassion: CM

KUSH HANG LEEWANG

GEYZING,: Chief Minister PS Golay on Saturday attended the centenary celebration of Government Senior Secondary School, Dentam, under Geyzing district.

Government Senior Secondary School, Dentam, was established in 1925 and has been serving the State’s education sector as a premier educational institution for the past 100 years.

In his address, the Chief Minister reflected on his past life as an educator and expressed that accessing education in earlier times was not easy, as there were limited government facilities available. He stated that founding an educational institution was particularly difficult in those days. He praised the land donors and founders for their sincere efforts in establishing Dentam Senior Secondary School, which has grown into a leading educational institution in Geyzing district and has served the State’s education sector comprehensively over the past century.

The Chief Minister read out and remembered the names of the land donors and founders of the school, stating that establishing a school for the people a hundred years ago was one of the noblest initiatives, and that their contributions should not be forgotten.

He further highlighted the establishment of higher educational institutions in various parts of the State and informed that the State government plans to establish a university in each constituency of Sikkim.

Golay shared that postgraduate teachers may now be promoted to the post of secretary. However, he appealed to teachers not to seek deputation to other departments, claiming that this culture of deputation could create a shortage of skilled human resources in the education sector.

In his address, Golay accused the former SDF government of leaving the education sector in complete disarray. He asserted that after the formation of the SKM government, significant improvements were made in the education sector through effective policies. He added that a well-formulated education and teacher recruitment policy was introduced by the SKM government for the holistic development of the sector.

He blamed the previous SDF government for failing to regularize ad-hoc teachers, despite their long-standing service in the education sector. He said that it was the SKM government that, upon coming to power, delivered justice by regularizing their services.

“The SKM government provided justice to ad-hoc teachers by regularizing their service. Instead of serving for eight years, ad-hoc teachers may now be regularized after four years of service. This is due to the flexible and farsighted policy of the SKM government,” the Chief Minister stated.

He described teaching as a noble profession that plays a key role in developing efficient human resources.

The Chief Minister reiterated that the State government aims to achieve 100% literacy in Sikkim by 2027. To reach this goal, he said, the government has been giving the highest priority to the education sector.

He also announced that national awardee teachers from Sikkim will be sent abroad for exposure tours. These tours will be facilitated to honour their exemplary contributions in the field of education.

Furthermore, he shared that the State government plans to introduce a new model of education based on three core values - happiness, curiosity, and compassion - to enhance the education sector and deliver educational services in the most student-friendly manner.

Responding to various developmental demands placed by area MLA Sudesh Kumar Limboo regarding the Maneybung-Dentam constituency, the Chief Minister assured that the demands would be looked into. Regarding the construction of a six-room school building, he confirmed that the work would begin very soon.

School principal Rajyashree Subba presented the school’s report, highlighting progress in academic performance and other co-curricular activities.

Along with the Chief Minister, the centenary celebration committee felicitated many individuals and alumni for their contributions to various fields of society.

At the programme, Golay handed over cheques from the Chief Minister’s Discretionary Fund to social organizations, students pursuing higher education, and victims of natural calamities.
