GANGTOK,: Chief Minister PS Golay on Tuesday informed that the State government has constituted a committee headed by Padma Shri Sanu Lama for restoring the original names of various places of Sikkim.

“We have formed a committee under Padma Shri Sanu Lama and given them the responsibility to find the correct names of the various places of Sikkim and submit it to the State government. We want that the correct names of the places in Sikkim should be maintained,” said Golay.

The Chief Minister was addressing the State-level Tendong Lho Rum Faat celebration at Manan Kendra here.

Golay mentioned that most of the places of Sikkim have seen a distortion of their original names. The original names have some meaning and history attached with these places but such names have been distorted and changed over course of time, he said. He added that the alteration of original names of the locations is a sensitive issue that is presently being debated in Sikkim.

“As an example, today we say ‘Mangalbaria’ but in reality, its original name is ‘Mangley’ which has some meaning, ‘Mangalbaria’ does not have a meaning attached with the place. Similarly, names of other places may get changed in future. Hence, we must have the correct original names as it was in history,” said the Chief Minister.
