The six-team league which kicked-off from February 24 was organised by the Sikkim Football Association (SFA), with Generali Central Insurance Company as the title sponsor. The other teams who took part were Chujachen SA, Northerners SC, Milan More FA (Siliguri) and Darjeeling XI.
Speaking to the media, chief guest MLA Kala Rai expressed her happiness in witnessing the skills and strength of women footballers in the final. She thanked the title sponsor for coming forward to support women football, and urged more companies to come forward for development of sports and sportspersons in Sikkim.
Ahead of the final, SFA president Menla Ethanpa hailed the Senior Women’s Football League as a landmark event for women’s football in Sikkim. “We are grateful to Generali Central Insurance for their unwavering support as our partner in this tournament. The overwhelming participation and community support demonstrate that women’s football has a bright future in the region,” he said.
Ethenpa shared that earlier, SFA used to organise football tournaments for women in a knock-out format. “Leagues are the best format for the players’ development as they play maximum games. In this league, every team played five matches and those reaching the final have played seven games. Hosting leagues help every player to get maximum playing time and enables them to gain more exposure and to strengthen their skills,” he said.
Commenting on the initiative, Anup Rau, MD&CEO, Generali Central Insurance, said, “We are proud to have partnered with the Sikkim Football Association in successfully organising the Senior Women’s Football League 2026, which has been a remarkable celebration of talent, determination and community spirit. The enthusiasm witnessed throughout the tournament clearly demonstrates the immense potential of women’s football in the region.”
“As the Lead Insurer for Sikkim, our commitment goes beyond providing financial security. We believe that creating platforms like these can play a transformative role in encouraging young girls to pursue sports with confidence and ambition. We hope the momentum created by this league will inspire greater participation and contribute to a more inclusive and vibrant sporting culture in the years ahead,” said Rau.
