6th Convocation of Sikkim Professional University held, 123 students receive degrees

GEYZING,: The 6th Convocation of Sikkim Professional University (SPU) was held on Saturday at its campus located in Budang under Soreng district. The event had Education minister Kunga Nima Lepcha as the chief guest.

Education secretary D.C. Nepal, MLA Sunita Gajmer, SPU chairman Hemant Kumar Goyal, vice chancellor (in-charge) Prof. Jaswant Sokhi, university officials, students, faculty members and invited dignitaries were also present.

During the convocation, 123 students of Sikkim Professional University received their degrees in various multi-disciplinary graduate, post-graduate and PhD programmes. This convocation ceremony was held offline once again after a hiatus of two years.

Students from all constituent colleges and units of SPU namely Sikkim Professional College of Allied Health Sciences (SPCAHS);  Sikkim Professional College of Physiotherapy (SPCP); Sikkim Professional College of Pharmacy (SPCPP); Sikkim Professional College of Nursing (SPCN), Sikkim Professional College of Arts and Science (SPCAS) were presented with their degrees.

Two university medals, 6 gold medals, 6 silver medals and 6 bronze medals were awarded to the outstanding students.

In his brief address, the Education minister appreciated the way SPU has been serving the education sector in Sikkim with an utmost dedication. He maintained that SPU has been established with an aim of creating an effective human resource required for greater development of the sectors those needed special priority.

Lepcha added that SPU having facility of providing education on wide range of the educational disciplines fulfils the aspirations of the students preferring their choice of subject.

“Education is not only for living but a life in itself. Education helps you to find light in the darkness and it must be given priority,” the minister said.

Lepcha shared that the SKM government has given utmost priority to education sector. He added that in near future Sikkim would be an educational hub with the establishment of higher educational institutions across the State.

In his welcome address, SPU chairman Hemant Kumar Goyal thanked Chief Minister P.S. Golay and his government for enabling the university to start and develop Gangtok and Budang campuses of Sikkim Professional University. “This will provide opportunities of higher studies to students of Budang and nearby areas.  With the support and guidance of seniors, and intellectuals of this area this university is constantly improving to fulfil the educational aspirations of this and nearby areas,” he said.

The SPU Budang campus had been inaugurated on October 31, 2020.

SPU vice-chancellor (in-charge) Prof.Jaswant Sokhi mentioned that Sikkim Professional University is an upcoming university in the State and is gradually yet firmly coming up in both its Gangtok and Budang campuses. 

Earlier, SPU registrar Prof. Ramesh Kumar Rawat while presenting highlights, overview and journey of the Sikkm Professional University, recollected the various milestones reached by SPU since its inception. He also expressed the objectives, mission and vision of the university.
