Past indifference towards Gurung community gives enough ground to examine Chamling’s claim with justified scepticism: SKM

GANGTOK,: Ruling SKM has contended that former Chief Minister Pawan Chamling’s poll promise of an International Gurung Cultural & Heritage Centre “warrants a closer examination” since it contrasts to indifference meted out to the community during the SDF government of 25 years.

Chamling had promised to set up the Gurung centre at Rinchenpong, West Sikkim during his election campaign there on Monday.

“While the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage are noble goals, using such promises as mere political tools just to appease and woo a certain community with no sincere intent not only lowers the standard of our politics but also poses a threat of communal politics raising its ugly head in our otherwise harmonious society. That the previous government did not accord the amount of attention needed for the protection, preservation and propagation of the Gurung community's rich culture and traditions in the twenty-five years of its government gives us enough ground to examine Pawan Chamling's claim with justified scepticism,” said SKM spokesperson Yougan Tamang in a media statement.

Yougan pointed out that the 'Rodhi Ghar' stands as a testament to the rich heritage and traditions of the Gurung community, built under the leadership of Chief Minister PS Golay and the SKM government. This cultural venue represents dedicated effort and substantial investment, he said.

“The SKM party has never exploited it for political gain and will continue to refrain from doing so. As Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) emphasizes, "It is the duty and responsibility of any government to protect the cultural heritage of all communities." In our pursuit of a brighter future, we urge our leaders to engage in politics grounded in reality and driven by a sincere desire to serve the interests of all communities. Only then can we achieve inclusive and sustainable development,” said the SKM spokesperson.
