SILIGURI, : Darjeeling MP Raju Bista on Sunday joined the on-going ‘BJYM Border Village Sampark Abhiyaan’ and visited Tin Bigha corridor situated along the Indo-Bangladesh border.
The Tin Bigha corridor enables Bangladesh to access Dahagram–Angarpota Bangladeshi enclaves within Indian territory.
Since Independence, India had 102 enclaves in Bangladesh, and Bangladesh had 71 enclaves in India. Complicating the matters further, both countries had enclaves within enclaves, also called counter-enclaves. India had three counter-enclaves and Bangladesh 25. For decades, Congress failed to resolve the problem faced by citizens who were residents of these enclaves.
Bista said, “Finally, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, the historic Constitution (119th Amendment) Bill was passed by Parliament in 2015. This allowed for the exchange of enclaves by India and Bangladesh. In the past the, Tin Bigha corridor symbolized conflict, but today, it has emerged as a symbol of cooperation and friendship between our two nations, and underlines the significance of 'Neighbourhood first' and ‘Look East’ policy championed by PM Modi ji."
He said that under the leadership of BJYM national president Tejasvi Surya, BJYM leaders and karyakartas from across India have joined the ‘BJYM Border Village Sampark Abhiyaan’. This campaign will see BJYM teams visit over 200 border villages across eight States and 50 districts of India.
