Zimba writes to PM, demands action on PPS

DARJEELING, : Darjeeling MLA Neeraj Zimba today wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging immediate resumption of the dialogue process for a Permanent Political Solution (PPS) to the long-pending issues of Indian Gorkhas.

Zimba, a BJP MLA and leader of Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF), also expressed the growing disillusionment of people here with the BJP government.

“Let history remember you not only as the Prime Minister who spoke of the Gorkha dream but as the leader who fulfilled it. Let it be recorded that in this decisive moment, when the fate of millions rested in your hands, you chose justice over delay, action over apathy, and truth over expediency,” wrote Zimba in his letter to the PM.

In the letter, Zimba also reminded the Prime Minister of the promises made by the BJP, specifically referencing Modi’s statement “Gorkha KaSwapna Mera Swapna” which Zimba argued was not merely a slogan but a solemn vow. He called upon the PM to uphold this vision and deliver on the BJP’s commitments.

Expressing the growing disillusionment within the community, Zimba warned, “The Gorkhas are not only losing hope in the BJP government, but more dangerously, they are also losing patience. Their trust, built over years, is now hanging by a fragile thread.”

He further raised concerns over the geopolitical vulnerability of the Darjeeling Hills and its adjoining region, warning that the lack of political resolution has created a vacuum being exploited by suspicious forces and elements. “This is a matter of utmost national concern,” he added.

Political observers view Zimba’s letter as part of the GNLF’s attempt to pressure the Central government to fulfil its promises ahead of the April 5, 2025 ultimatum. On July 27, 2024, GNLF president Mann Ghisingh had given the BJP a deadline to address the Gorkha demands including the Permanent Political Solution (PPS) and tribal status for 11 Gorkha communities as promised in the BJP’s 2019 LokSabha election manifesto.
