BJP Sikkim celebrates 50 Years of Statehood at Jorethang

GANGTOK, : The State BJP on Friday commemorated Sikkim’s 50th year of Statehood with a grand celebration in Jorethang, attended by State unit president DR Thapa, NEC member NK Subba, vice president Dinesh Chandra Nepal, general secretary Arjun Rai, party functionaries and the general public.

A State BJP press release informs that the event featured engaging discussions on Sikkim’s rich history, its journey as India’s 22nd State, and its vision for the future, focusing on achievements, challenges, and strategies for sustainable growth.

BJP spokesperson Passang Gyali Sherpa reflected on Sikkim’s historic journey and its integration as the 22nd State of the Indian Union, expressing gratitude to all Chief Ministers for their exceptional contributions to Sikkim’s progress under various democratic governments. He acknowledged the challenges facing Sikkimese society and emphasized the need for unity and collective efforts to address them, the release mentions.

Addressing the gathering, State BJP president DR Thapa paid tribute to the heroes of the 1973 Democratic Movement for their sacrifices in shaping modern Sikkim. He highlighted the visionary initiative of the then Chogyal for introducing the Sikkim Subject in 1961, which remains a cornerstone of Article 371F and holds immense significance today.

Thapa also commended the progress of Sikkim since the advent of democracy, expressing gratitude to all Chief Ministers, public representatives from the Assembly to panchayat levels, bureaucrats, farmers, and communities for their collective contributions.

Addressing future challenges, he noted that corruption and development cannot coexist, referencing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent statement that water and blood cannot flow together in his remarks against Pakistan.

Thapa called for unified efforts to build a stronger, more prosperous Sikkim. He praised BJP Sikkim Karyakartas for their dedicated Sewa and Sampark Abhiyan initiatives across the State. He also congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian Defence Forces for the success of Operation Sindoor, urging Sikkimese citizens to stand in solidarity with the armed forces.

Earlier, State BJP Mahila Morcha general secretary Srijana Chettri showcased the transformative welfare schemes of the Modi Government, emphasizing their role in uplifting communities. The event was also addressed by BJP NEC member NK Subba and others.

In a significant step towards empowerment, the BJP Sikkim Mahila Morcha distributed Ayushman Bharat Cards to 500 beneficiaries, E-shram Cards to 150 beneficiaries, and LPG connections under the Ujjwala Yojana to 150 beneficiaries, reinforcing the party’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and brighter future for all, the release mentions.

Following the celebration, BJP Sikkim organised a Tiranga Yatra covering Jorethang Bazar to celebrate the valour of Bharat's brave soldiers, marking the triumph of Operation Sindoor against terrorism. Led by the State BJP president, the yatra brought together Karyakartas, NGOs representatives, and civil society members from Jorethang in a show of unity and solidarity, informs the release from Sikkim BJP media in-charge Niren Bhandari.
