ECI allots ‘Nagarik’ symbol to Citizen Action Party Sikkim

GANGTOK,: The Citizen Action Party (CAP) Sikkim has received a ‘citizen’ as its election symbol from the Election Commission of India (ECI).

CAP Sikkim president LP Kafley, chief coordinator Ganesh Rai and party functionaries unveiled the ‘citizen’ election symbol during a brief function held at Rangpo on Friday.

The symbol ‘citizen’ or ‘Nagarik’ represents the citizens with whom our party is closely attached with and their democratic power to elect themselves, expressed the CAP Sikkim president to media.

Kafley informed that there is a provision to get the symbol from the ECI within one month of being registered with the commission. After CAP Sikkim got the ECI registration, we applied and got our election symbol, he said.

The CAP Sikkim had received ECI registration on December 1. The party had been launched at Melli by party’s chief coordinator Ganesh Rai earlier this year on January 26 with a call for reforms in Sikkim.

Asked what the ‘citizen’ symbol represents, the CAP Sikkim president said: “So far, political parties in Sikkim used to be formed by one person. However, we have formed the CAP after due consultation with the people. It are the Nagariks who formed our party and hence CAP is a party of the citizens.”

Kafley added that the leaders who have been elected have not met the expectations of the people in Sikkim. “Sikkim is facing economic crises with a huge debt while unemployment is at an all-time high. So our symbol signifies that people should come together and vote for themselves to bring the much-needed reforms in Sikkim.”
