GANGTOK, : Sikkim’s acclaimed folk dancer Dilu Tamang has been selected by the
prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi to represent India at an international cultural
event titled “Ullas” scheduled to be held in Osaka, Japan on April 12.
The
event is being organized by the Indian Social Society Komochi Kobe, with the
aim of promoting Indian folk arts on a global stage, a press release on Friday informs.
Dilu Tamang,
hailing from 6th Mile, Tadongin Gangtok, will showcase traditional Sikkimese
folk dances including Maruni, Ghatu, andTamangSelo—an opportunity that not only
highlights her talent but also shines a spotlight on the rich cultural heritage
of the Himalayan State.
She
is one of only thirteen artistes selected across India by the
Sangeet Natak Akademi after a rigorous selection process, making this recognition
even more special for the state and the region, the release mentions.
In
a social media post, Chief Minister PS Golay has extended his heartiest
congratulations to Dilu on being selected to represent India at the
international cultural event “Ullas” in Osaka.
“Being
one of only 13 artistes chosen from across India, her achievement is a moment
of immense pride for Sikkim. Best wishes for a successful performance,” said
the Chief Minister.
Dilu,
who is also known as Dil Kumari Tamang, is not only a performer but also a
choreographer, dance director, and teacher. She has been running the Dynamic
Flickers Dance Academy with co-founder Passang Sherpa in Sikkim since 2014 and
continues to mentor young dancers across the State. Her journey began in her
childhood, performing at school and State-level events, and her passion for
dance has only grown stronger over the years.
Speaking
about her selection, Dilu shared, “It’s a dream come true. I’m honored to
represent not only my State but also my country on such a prestigious platform.
Folk dance is my soul, and I hope to continue learning and inspiring through my
art.”
