GANGTOK,: The Gangtok Municipal Corporation (GMC) on Monday kicked-off an intensive Swachhata drive with a theme ‘Safai Apano Bimari Bhagao’ in alignment with the ‘Stop diarrhoea campaign’ from Development Area under the leadership of deputy Mayor Tshering Palden Bhutia.

Speaking to the media, the deputy Mayor said the Swachhata drive was initiated as per the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the vision of Chief Minister PS Golay who have always advocated for keeping the environment and surroundings neat and clean.

Following the same the GMC today with the support of GMC safai mitras and locals of Development Area carried out the massive cleanliness drive. Similar cleanliness events will soon be implemented in all the 19 wards of the GMC area along with the whole of State.

The campaign concludes on August 31.

“During the campaign, we will focus on cleaning of the wards and the local jhoras to keep away water-borne diseases. This is monsoon time and it's very important for all of us to come together in keeping the surroundings clean with a view to avert diseases. Likewise, the GMC has been advocating and carrying out cleanliness, waste management drives and there have been improvements.  However, there are a few people who are still dumping waste and garbage on the jhoras. It is high time that people realize that dumping of waste and garbage in jhoras may lead to natural disasters and we appeal to the people to refrain from such acts,” said the deputy Mayor.

GMC alone cannot upkeep the cleanliness of Gangtok along with waste management and we request the general masses to join hands in making the city cleanest and beautiful, appealed the deputy Mayor.
