Governor lauds Khangchendzonga State University for language preservation

GANGTOK, : Governor Om Prakash Mathur along with Chief Minister PS Golay on Sunday attended the 3rd Convocation of Khangchendzonga State University (KSU) held at Chintan Bhavan here.

A Raj Bhavan release informs that the Governor awarded gold and silver medals to students of Sanskrit and Nepali departments for their outstanding academic performance.

A total of 43 degree holders were conferred with their degrees during the ceremony.

Additionally, the Governor released the University Research Journal during the programme.

Congratulating the awardees, distinction holders, and medal winners, the Governor expressed his delight in attending the convocation ceremony. He emphasized the significance of education in shaping society, the State, and the nation. He commended Khangchendzonga State University for its dedication to providing quality education and essential facilities to students, despite operating from a temporary campus. Acknowledging the university’s role as a torchbearer of education in the region, he encouraged adherence to the guidelines set forth by the National Education Policy (NEP).

The Governor lauded KSU for its contribution to language preservation in Sikkim by incorporating regional languages as a primary area of study. He highlighted that language connects individuals to their roots and culture and expressed appreciation for the State government’s initiative to include Sanskrit in schools and colleges.

Underscoring the importance of education, the Governor stated that it is the most valuable asset one can possess. He emphasized that the vision of the Prime Minister for a Viksit Bharat@2047 would be realized through the efforts and dedication of the students graduating today.

Furthermore, he urged the graduating students to stay connected with society and contribute at the grassroots level as they embark on their professional journeys. He encouraged them to aspire for greater heights while fostering societal development.

Currently, Khangchendzonga University offers programs in five major languages: Sanskrit, Nepali, Lepcha, Bhutia, and Limbu.

Similarly, Chief Minister PS Golay expressed his happiness on attending on the 3rd convocation ceremony of the KSU which celebrated the hard work and achievements of the 2024 graduating batch. He highlighted that the Khangchendzonga State University has made significant progress since its inception in 2018, expanding its academic programs and contributing to the intellectual growth of Sikkim.

“To further enhance higher education, we are constructing a world-class permanent campus at Temi-Tarku. The first phase is nearing completion, and once fully operational, it will provide a cutting-edge learning environment for students,” said the Chief Minister in a social media post after the event.

The Chief Minister added that Sikkim is evolving as an educational hub, and the State government is dedicated to globalizing the local talent while attracting students from around the world. Our vision is to empower youth with the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world, he said.

“The State government is committed to making quality education accessible to all. We have introduced several initiatives, including free education in government colleges, support for Sanskrit education, the APATAN Fellowship Programme, and the N.B. Bhandari Fellowship for higher studies abroad. Additionally, we have reserved 80 MBBS seats at Sikkim Manipal University for Sikkimese students, with 50 of them free for economically weaker sections,” shared the Chief Minister.
