TMC exodus in Darjeeling hills continues, councillor Sanjay Gurung quits party

DARJEELING, : A fresh wave of resignations hit the Trinamool Congress in the Darjeeling hills on Wednesday with party leader and Darjeeling Municipality councillor Sanjay Gurung quitting the outfit citing personal reasons.

Gurung, president of TMC Darjeeling Hill Town Committee and councillor of Ward No. 5 of the Darjeeling Municipality, submitted his resignation to TMC (Hills) president Shanta Chettri.

“From today onwards, I along with our party town vice-president here Pranoy Pradhan have resigned from the party. The reason for my resignation from the party is due to some personal reasons,” Gurung told reporters.

He, however, said he would continue to work for the people.

In his resignation letter, Gurung said he was stepping down from his post, party membership and all responsibilities of the Hill Trinamool Congress with immediate effect.

The resignation comes close on the heels of a mass exit of TMC leaders and cadres in Mirik earlier this month.

TMC chairman L.B. Rai had then announced his resignation along with party members in Mirik, while local committees of the party were also dissolved.

Gurung was one of the two TMC councillors in the 32-member Darjeeling Municipality board.
