GANGTOK, (IPR): The 7th Sarathi Samman Diwas was celebrated with great reverence
and enthusiasm on Sunday, honoring the invaluable contributions of Sikkim’s
driver community. The event was graced by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay
accompanied by his spouse Krishna Rai, who together extended heartfelt
congratulations and best wishes to all the driver-gurujis and their families.
In
his address, the Chief Minister acknowledged the tireless service, resilience,
and dedication of the driving community, stating that their role in connecting
people, supporting the economy, and upholding public service is irreplaceable.
A
major highlight of the event was the announcement of a medical insurance scheme
for licensed commercial taxi drivers operating within the State. Under this
initiative, drivers will receive coverage of up to Rs
5 lakh annually for
hospitalization due to illness or accidents. Initially, the scheme will benefit
5,000 drivers, with plans to expand coverage in future phases.
The
Chief Minister paid tribute to all segments of the driving workforce, including
government vehicle operators, private transport drivers, truck and tipper
drivers who facilitate trade and logistics, and tourist vehicle drivers who
represent the spirit and hospitality of Sikkim. Special recognition was given
to women drivers - mothers, daughters, and daughters-in-law—who balance family
responsibilities while making their mark on the road, exemplifying strength,
courage, and determination.
In
his concluding remarks, the Chief Minister thanked the entire driver community
for their dedicated service and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to their
welfare. He called upon all to continue working in unity and pride for the
progress of Sikkim.
The
Sarathi Samman Diwas, now in its 7th edition, continues to stand as a unique
and meaningful initiative honoring those who keep Sikkim moving.
