SILIGURI, : After fifty-six women were rescued from New Jalpaiguri Railway Station recently, another 34 women from Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar districts were rescued from a trafficking attempt in the Siliguri Junction area on Sunday night.
Siliguri, the “chicken neck” for the Northeastern States, has long served as a transit point for human trafficking.
On Sunday around 7:30 pm, a Siliguri Metropolitan Police team raided a Ranchi bound bus at Siliguri Junction during which a shocking revelation followed. Thirty-four women were being transported to Tamil Nadu under false job promises.
According to police, the bus was headed for Ranchi, Bihar, where the women were scheduled to board a train to Tamil Nadu.
Three suspected traffickers escorting the women were apprehended. They have been identified as Gautam Roy (28), a temporary resident of Siliguri and originally from Bihar; Petrus Beck (42) of Juranti Tea Garden in Matelli; and Joyshree Paul (32) from Janata Nagar. All three are currently in the custody of Pradhan Nagar Police.
According to Pradhan Nagar Police Stationi-in-charge B.D. Sarkar, most of the women are from tea garden areas and had been lured by agents with false promises of employment in garment factories in Chennai.
Police also recovered appointment letters from some of the women, indicating that they were to be paid Rs. 11,000 by a Tripura-based garment company.
DCP Biswa Chand Thakur stated that the three individuals accompanying the women failed to provide any valid documents or job-related papers during questioning.
Earlier on July 21, 56 women were rescued by the RPF and GRP in a joint operation at NJP.
