GANGTOK,: The Sikkim Judicial Academy (SJA) on Saturday organized an insightful lecture here featuring Kapil Sibal, eminent lawyer and Rajay Sabha MP.
The event, held at the SJA here, was graced by Chief Justice Biswanath Somadder, High Court of Sikkim, as the chief guest.
Other distinguished attendees included Justice Meenakshi Madan Rai, Justice Bhaskar Raj Pradhan, former Judge Justice AP Subba, former Judge Justice SP Wangdi, Sikkim Police DGP AK Singh, and 17th Mountain Division GOC Major General Amit Kabthiyal alongside members of High Court of Sikkim.
In attendance were the faculty members and law students from Government Law College, ICFAI University, Medhavi University, Sikkim University, and the Indian Institute of Legal Studies, Siliguri.
The lecture was divided into two sessions, the first of which focused on “Subordinate Judiciary.”
Sibal traced the history of the Indian judiciary, touching on the Simon Commission and other historical developments that shaped the current judicial structure, delving into whether the courts serve as subordinate bodies within the judiciary. He is also the president of Supreme Court Bar Association.
The second session, titled “Value of President,” included Sibal’s reflections and personal perspectives on the role and significance of the presidency within the judiciary.
The talk concluded with an engaging Q&A session, followed by a special address from the Chief Justice, who emphasized the importance of wisdom over force, quoting, “Raise your words, not your voice. It is rain that grows flowers, not thunder.” He described the discussions as thought-provoking, encouraging further reflection on the judicial system. He also lauded Sibal’s distinguished legal career.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Nima Gyalpo Sherpa, director of the Sikkim Judicial Academy, who expressed gratitude to the dignitaries, guests, universities, and the organizing team for their participation. The programme was also live-streamed on the official YouTube channel of the High Court of Sikkim.
