LTVC seeks PVTG status for Limboo community

GANGTOK, : The Limboo-Tamang Voluntary Committee (LTVC) has submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister’s Office, seeking Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) status for the Limboo community of Sikkim.

The memorandum, addressed to Chief Minister P.S. Golay, also carries the signatures of former Chief Ministers, former MPs, former MLAs, representatives of major community-based associations, political parties and other stakeholders in support of the demand, the LTVC said.

In the memorandum, LTVC urged the State government to take necessary steps to pursue the inclusion of the Limboo community in the Central PVTG list, citing its historical and indigenous background.

The committee stated that it had earlier submitted memorandums to the Governor, Chief Minister’s Office, Chief Secretary and Home secretary in December 2017. It also referred to a memorandum dated August 12, 2020, and the State government’s related file, which it said had already been processed.

According to LTVC, the signatures of representatives from different communities and political organizations reflect broad support for the demand and the absence of objections among the signatories to granting PVTG status to the Limboo community. “For the absolute support they have provided there should be no reason and/or cause for the incumbent government of Sikkim leading to the immediate delivery of the demand. Doing so will inculcate trust amongst all sections of Sikkimese society and foster truth in action,” the committee said.

The committee expressed hope that the State government will respect the community’s historical rights and take up the matter with the Centre. “We hope the ancestral right of the Limboo will be respected through the powers of the Government of Sikkim fulfilling which, the said government shall, as we pray and insist upon, proceed to inform, advise and assist the Government of India to recognize the Indigenous Limbu and Lepcha tribes of Sikkim to be included in the Central PVTG list on the basis of LTVC memorandum,” the LTVC said.
