Bailey bridge planned to restore Rimbi-Yuksam road

GEYZING,: The Gyalshing district administration is preparing to construct a Bailey bridge over a stream to restore connectivity along the Rimbi-Yuksam road, which has remained closed since September 14 following incessant rainfall and a recurring landslide.

The affected stretch at Singlitam ward under Rimbi-Timbrong GPU in Yuksam subdivision has completely disrupted road connectivity between Gyalshing and Yuksam via Khangchendzonga Falls.

A culvert had existed at the spot before the landslide swept away a large portion of the road, including the culvert, cutting off the route.

Gyalshingdistrict collectorTenzing D Denzongpa said the district administration, in coordination with the Roads and Bridges department, is preparing to construct a Bailey bridge at the affected stretch.

Work is likely to commence soon, subject to weather conditions, he said.

Area MLA and Tourism minister Tshering T. Bhutia is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with the district administration and concerned departments for restoration of the road, officials said.

Adverse weather conditions, however, continue to hamper restoration efforts.

The district administration has advised people not to use the affected route until further orders and take the Legship-Tashiding-Gerethang-Yuksam road as an alternative.

The Rimbi settlement remains vulnerable due to the recurring landslide above the area. No casualties or loss of livestock have been reported so far.
