GANGTOK,: As the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY) completes its first year on February 13, Sikkim is actively working to expand its rooftop solar initiatives.

The scheme, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2024, aims to provide free electricity to households by installing solar panels on rooftops, with a national target of covering one crore homes by 2027.

In Sikkim, the Sikkim Renewable Energy Development Agency (SREDA) is leading the implementation to promote sustainable energy adoption across the State.

SREDA director Jiwan Thapa shared that an awareness program in various locations namely Gyashling, Jorethang, Gangtok, etc. was successfully conducted, resulting in more than 100 applications from interested residents. He emphasized that the scheme is still in its early stages, with public awareness and participation being the primary focus.

With SREDA now operating under Power department, the agency is working toward achieving the State’s Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) and supporting India's broader goal of 175 GW renewable energy capacities.

Sikkim’s push for rooftop solar energy aligns with its commitment to environmental sustainability and energy self-sufficiency. As awareness and participation grow, the initiative is expected to significantly reduce dependence on conventional electricity, ensuring a greener future for the State.
