Travel Less, Rest More: Sikkim’s New Tourism Mantra of Sleep Tourism

TIMOTHY RAI (PhD Scholar, SRM University Sikkim) DR. SANJIV KUMAR SHARMA (HoD& Associate Professor

A new trend gaining importance in tourism is sleep tourism a very noble concept for state like Sikkim. Unlike adventure tourism, many travellers today look for holidays that help them escape daily stress, enjoy mental peace, disconnect from noise, and experience proper rest.

Sikkim has strong potential to attract sleep tourists because of its peaceful environment, fresh mountain air, waterfalls, and beautiful mountain landscapes. Destinations such asPelling,Yakten, Ravangla, Yuksom,Lachung and Lachen with their cool climate, offer an ideal setting for relaxation and quality sleep.Sleep tourists usually prefer soundproof rooms, comfortable beds, blackout curtains, herbal teas, spa services, yoga, meditation, and soft music. Sikkim already offers many of these experiences along with warm local hospitality and a favourable atmosphere.

The development of sleep tourism can benefit Sikkim by increasing the average stay of visitors, boosting off-season tourism, creating jobs for yoga instructors, therapists, and wellness professionals, and supporting rural areas where tourists seek peace and quiet surroundings.

With improvements in hospitality infrastructure, specialized wellness training, effective branding, and a well-structured Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, this emerging concept can open new avenues for young entrepreneurs and stakeholders. Sikkim has the potential to establish itself as a premier Himalayan hub for wellness and Sleep tourism at both national and international levels.
