GANGTOK, :
The earthquake that struck Gyalshing area on the intervening night of February
5-6 has caused structural impacts in some school buildings in the district.
During
a site inspection conducted today, preliminary information confirmed the
presence of cracks in various school buildings, said Dentam education office in
a press release.
“According
to the information received, several major and minor cracks have developed on
the walls and ceilings of different buildings at Hee-Yangthang Senior Secondary
School. In addition, separation and damage have also been noticed in door and
window frames, as reported by the school head,” the release states.
Similarly,
at Bongten Senior Secondary School, both major and minor cracks have been
observed on the walls and floors and ceilings. This condition has been
officially reported by the school principal.
Likewise,
at the old junior high school building under Khandu Senior Secondary School,
multiple minor cracks have appeared on the walls, according to the school
administration. During today’s inspection, the condition of buildings at Radhu
Junior High School and Lower Radhu Primary School was also assessed.
“So
far, no human casualties have been reported. However, considering the safety of
students and teachers, the concerned authorities have stated that further
technical assessment is necessary,” the release states.
The
district education office and the concerned administration are closely
monitoring the situation.
