GANGTOK,:
The second edition of the Zabarvan Legends Series (ZLS) downhill mountain
biking championship will begin at Zoom village in West Sikkim on October 11,
bringing together around 30 national and international riders.
The
three-stop series, which will also travel to Ladakh and Pune, will see
participation from nearly 60 athletes from India, Australia, the Czech
Republic, Iran, Brazil, Nepal, Taiwan and other countries, organisers said.
Downhill
mountain biking is a timed discipline in which riders negotiate steep and
technically challenging courses featuring natural and man-made obstacles.
The
Sikkim race will be held on an approximately 2-km “urban hybrid” course
featuring steep slopes, jumps, descending stairs and dirt sections, offering a
mix of urban and wilderness terrain.
The
series will then move to Ladakh, where riders will compete on a higher-altitude
course in colder and drier conditions, before concluding at Sinhagad Fort in
Pune.
The
series carries a total prize purse of Rs 21 lakh, with Rs 5 lakh allocated for
each of the three races and Rs 6 lakh for the overall series winners.
“We
hope that hosting the race in Sikkim will open doors to organising the Asian
Championships and Mountain Bike World Cups in the state in the near future,”
said Sehan Shetty, founder of Zabarvan and co-organiser of ZLS.
