SILIGURI, : A pall of gloom descended over Bagdogra after a young school student allegedly died following a suspected snake bite, triggering grief among residents and the school community.

Hundreds of students, teachers, staff members, parents and local residents gathered to offer prayers and pay tribute to Adril Munda, a Class II student of Good Shepherd School and a resident of Sanyasisthan Tea Estate.

On Saturday, Adril’s parents, Ajay and Kalistika, along with other family members, attended a prayer service organised by the school authorities in memory of the deceased.

school principal Sister Betsy said, “A prayer service in memory of our dear student Adril Munda was organised so that she may rest in peace. The loss of such a young life is a shared grief for our entire school family, and our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family during this incredibly difficult time.”

According to family members, the incident occurred around midnight on April 29 when the child woke up screaming, complaining of pain in her right hand and difficulty in breathing. Her mother noticed bleeding from the spot, following which she was rushed to a nearby private nursing home.

Doctors at the nursing home suspected a snake bite and referred her to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital for administration of anti-venom. However, she was declared brought dead upon arrival.

A snake expert from the Bagdogra forest range, Shrestha Talukdar, who was called to the spot, attempted to trace the snake but could not locate it due to darkness. Based on the bite marks, the expert suspected it to be a cobra bite.

According to Talukdar, incidents of snakes entering homes tend to increase during the monsoon season as they search for food such as rats and frogs.
