GANGTOK, : The Citizen Action Party (CAP) Sikkim has formally approached the
Election Commission of India (ECI), seeking urgent intervention against what it
describes as the undemocratic and coercive practices of the ruling Sikkim
KrantikariMorcha (SKM) government.
The
party’s spokesperson, Mahesh Rai, along with the National Coordinator, Pobin
Hang Subba, submitted a memorandum at NirvachanSadan, New Delhi, urging the commission
to take cognizance of alleged political victimisation faced by opposition
members and supporters in the State, a CAP Sikkim press release informs on
Friday.
In
its memorandum, CAPSikkim highlighted instances of alleged victimisation
through arbitrary transfer postings, termination of services, and denial of
fair opportunities to opposition supporters.
‘These
concerns were further substantiated by a public statement made by a former
minister who joined the SKM party on 4 February 2026, during the party’s 14th
Foundation Day celebrations at Rangpo. In his statement, the former minister
reportedly acknowledged that persistent pressure on his supporters - through
punitive transfers and deprivation of constitutionally guaranteed rights - compelled
his decision to join the ruling party,” said the CAP Sikkim.
The
two CAP Sikkim functionaries called upon the Election Commission to take
immediate and decisive action to safeguard democratic principles, ensure a
level playing field, and protect the constitutional rights of citizens in
Sikkim.
“The
CAP Sikkim reiterated its commitment to democracy, transparency, and the rule
of law, and expressed confidence that the Election Commission would act to
prevent the misuse of power and protect electoral fairness in the State,” the
release mentions.
