Gingerfeet takes a satirical swipe at politics and power with new single ‘So What?!’

GANGTOK,: Politics, power, empty promises, and a system that never changes. Gingerfeet’s newly released music video, ‘So What?!’, is a satirical take on the absurdities of politics, wrapped in raw alternative rock energy.

Released a few days ago on Gingerfeet’s official YouTube channel and across all major music streaming platforms, the music video has been produced and directed by the band. It also features the members of Gingerfeet acting in a music video for the first time.

Gingerfeet is an acclaimed funk-rock and alternative band based in Kurseong/Darjeeling. Formed in 2012, the band participated in the Hornbill Rock Contest that same year and emerged victorious. It went on to win Hard Rock Rising India in 2013, followed by the release of its debut album, “High and Above: The First Wave”.

The band has headlined and co-headlined several music festivals, including NH7 Weekender, Orange Festival, Hornbill Music Festival, The Pine Tree Festival and Spring Fest at IIT Kharagpur, among others.

Gingerfeet also had the opportunity to open for Slash feat. Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators at the MTV Xtreme Music Festival in Mumbai in 2015.

The band’s streaming catalogue boasts 15 songs, nine from its album and the remaining released as singles.

The line-up includes Abhishek Gurung on vocals, Dibya Raj Mukhia on guitar, Vedanta Raj Baraily on lead guitar, Lokesh Thapa on bass and Thupden Bhutia on drums.

Thupden Bhutia, who hails from Namchi, joined the band as its new official drummer in 2025 and has already started making his presence felt.

Gingerfeet is scheduled to perform at the Cherry Blossom Festival 2026 in Shillong this November, alongside headliners Nelly, pop-rock band Boys Like Girls, Khalid and Swae Lee.

Excerpts from an exclusive interview with SIKKIM EXPRESS…

So What?! takes a satirical look at “politics, power, empty promises and a system that never changes”. What inspired the band to explore these themes through the song?

Gingerfeet: The world, as we see it, has been spiralling down the drain, and all we can do is sit and sulk. However, as artists, when we have a platform to exercise our freedom of expression, we should use every opportunity to break the silence.

Why did you choose satire as a medium to convey your message?

Gingerfeet: Well, it’s convincing enough to convey the message without ruffling any feathers.

Was there a particular political event, experience or observation that shaped the narrative of the music video?

Gingerfeet: Nothing in particular. It was just pure expression.

What does So What?! represent for GINGERFEET, both musically and creatively?

Gingerfeet: We’ve come a long way since our first album. Things have definitely changed in terms of the way we write and compose, but at its core, it’s still the same. We see things a little differently now than we did back in the day, and that has eventually started reflecting in our songs.

What kind of response have you received from your audience, particularly young people?

Gingerfeet: So far, the song is resonating very well with listeners. I guess that answers it!

Not many artists or bands from the hills explore such themes. Why does Gingerfeet feel it is important for artists to question those in power, particularly through music?

Gingerfeet: We’ve always tried to cover topics that intrigue us the most and have never shied away from expressing ourselves unapologetically. Considering what’s happening around the world, we chose to explore a much more adventurous route and, hence, sprinkled it with a little satire.

Is So What?! part of your upcoming album? Could you tell us about the new album, other projects in the pipeline?

Gingerfeet: Although we haven’t shelved the idea of releasing a second album, we do not want to be creatively confined by it. We want to release as many singles as we can until we find enough inspiration to hit the studio and record the album in one go.
