SILIGURI, : An alert has been sounded across parts of North Bengal following reports of a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) in Bhutan, triggering concerns over a possible rise in water levels in rivers flowing downstream towards the Dooars, Terai and adjoining areas of North Bengal.

Darjeeling MP Raju Bista has issued an urgent public advisory, urging residents living along riverbanks and vulnerable areas to remain alert and move to safer locations wherever necessary.

In his advisory, Bista stated, "A glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) has been reported at Lemthang in Bhutan. The overflowing water from the lake is flowing downwards through the Mofu River towards the Sunkosh River."

He further informed that everyone living in the catchment areas of the Sunkosh River and all its connected tributaries has been advised to move to a safe distance immediately to protect their lives.

"Everyone in our Darjeeling hills, Terai and Dooars region are requested to stay alert," Bista appealed.

The warning comes amid reports of floodwaters carrying large quantities of debris, disrupting road connectivity in parts of Bhutan. The Zomlingthang road in Punakha has reportedly been covered with debris washed down by floodwaters, affecting traffic movement. Tourists stranded in the affected area are also being escorted by local guides towards Punakha town.

Residents living along the Sunkosh River and its connected tributaries, particularly in vulnerable areas of North Bengal, have been urged not to take the warning lightly.

Residents across the Darjeeling hills, Terai and Dooars have been requested to remain vigilant, follow official advisories and prioritise their safety.
