Helen Lepcha Sikkim Government Medical College Logo and Bust Unveiled

GANGTOK,  (IPR): Governor Om Prakash Mathur, in the presence of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang and Minister for Health and Family Welfare and Culture Departments, G.T Dhungel, unveiled the bust of Helen Lepcha and logo of Helen Lepcha Sikkim Government Medical College at Sokeythang today.

Helen Lepcha Sikkim Government Medical College was virtually inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 28, 2026.

Marking a historic milestone, the college is the first government medical college in the State. The campus comprises an Academic Building as the central facility, along with separate accommodation facilities, including Boys’ Hostel for UG students, Boys’ Hostel for Interns and PG students, Girls’ Hostel for UG students, and Girls’ Hostel for Interns and PG students.

The campus also includes a Nurses’ Hostel, Nursing Superintendent’s Quarter, Non-Teaching Staff Quarters, Teaching Staff Quarters, Resident Doctors’ Hostel, and Principal and Vice-Principal’s Quarters.

Sports and recreational facilities include a Basketball Court, Volleyball Court, Gymnasium, and Indoor Badminton Court. The campus also has essential utility infrastructure, including an Underground Reservoir (UGR) and Pump Room, Electrical Substation, DG Set, Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP), and a Day Care Centre. The campus layout incorporates internal vehicular roads, pedestrian pathways, landscaped areas, and drainage and water channels, with designated access roads connecting the various facilities.

Helen Lepcha (1902-1980) was a freedom fighter born in Songbong, Assangthang, Namchi District. She dedicated her life to India’s freedom struggle and actively participated in the Non-Cooperation Movement and the Quit India Movement. In recognition of her contribution to the freedom struggle, she was honoured with the Tamra Patra by the Government of India in 1972.

The logo of HLSGMC represents medical science, education, and service to humanity, rooted in the State’s Himalayan heritage, and carries the motto, “Learning to Heal, Serving Humanity.”

The unveiling ceremony was also attended by Cabinet Ministers, Advisors, MLAs, the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Gangtok Municipal Corporation and Councillors, Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, Secretaries and Heads of Departments of various departments, senior officers, officials, and other dignitaries.
