Preparations for Khamsel ceremony at Tholung Monastery

MANGAN, (IPR): A joint inspection of Bay Lingzya under the Sakyong Pentong Gram Panchayat Unit (GPU) in Upper Dzongu was conducted today by the Forest minister-cum-Area MLA (Dzongu) Pintso Namgyal Lepcha. The inspection was carried out in preparation for the upcoming Khamsel ceremony, scheduled to be held at Tholung in Dzongu from November 20 to 22.

The Khamsel ceremony is a triennial event of great cultural and religious significance, during which sacred relics and artefacts from Tholung Monastery, usually kept sealed, are displayed for public veneration. This sacred ritual draws numerous devotees from across the region, making adequate infrastructure essential for smooth proceedings.

The Minister was accompanied by Upadhakshya Sonam Kipa Bhutia, DM Mangan Anant Jain, SP Mangan Sonam Detchu Bhutia, SDM Dzongu Gideon Lepcha, BDO Dzongu Mahendra Tamang, RO Dzongu Wangyal Sherpa, Dy Dir DDMA Karma Dorjee, AE PMGSY Tseten Thinley Lachungoa, AE Roads and Bridges Sonam Wangchuk Bhutia, and AE BAC Netuk Lepcha along with officials from various concerned line departments.

During the inspection, minister Pintso Lepcha raised concerns over the lack of proper road connectivity in the region. He emphasised the challenges posed by the area's rugged topography and its susceptibility to natural disasters, particularly during the monsoon season. Stressing the importance of long-term solutions, he urged the administration to prioritise sustainable development.

The District Magistrate directed concerned officials to expedite their efforts and ensure all preparations are completed on time. He assured full administrative support to address any challenges faced during the planning and execution phases.

The team surveyed the road leading to Bay, noting its condition and discussing preparatory measures necessary for the ceremony. These included ensuring efficient traffic management, improving water supply, constructing eco-friendly footpaths, and setting up public conveniences.

The inspection also extended to key infrastructure projects in the region. The team visited the construction sites of bridges connecting Lingdem to Tingvong and Laven to Lingzya. Additionally, they inspected landslide-affected areas at Lingzya and the premises of Sonam Choda Lepcha Memorial School in Lingdong.

Earlier in the day, the minister inaugurated a newly constructed temporary bailey bridge at Mantam, lauding the timely completion of the project and the efforts of those involved.

The inspection underscored the pressing need to address the poor road conditions in the region.

The minister reiterated that robust connectivity is crucial not only for facilitating cultural events like Khamsel but also for ensuring the overall development and safety of the community.
