GANGTOK: Sikkim ended their Col CK Nayudu Trophy campaign with a consolation win over Mizoram on Monday.
Needing 35 runs to win on Day 2, the hosts won by nine wickets in a Group B encounter at the Sikkim Cricket Ground, at Mining.
Resuming at the overnight score of 141 for eight, Sikkim posted 161 in their first innings before bowlers eviscerated Mizoram in just four hours to bowl them out for 135 in their second.
Sikkim chased down the target in 4.5 overs with opener Arun Chettri smacking five boundaries in his 16-ball 25.
Earlier, Mizoram were blown away by Tarun Sharma’s five-wicket haul, falling to 135 all out as they managed a lead of only 34 runs after being bundled out for 60 in the first innings in what was effectively under a session’s worth of batting.
Tarun ripped through the Mizoram batting line-up to finish with figures of five for 29 from 15.2 overs.
Aadil Alam scalped two, while Rahul Kumar and Anwesh Sharma grabbed a wicket apiece.
The win gave Sikkim six points in their inaugural under-25 tournament against some of the best teams in India after getting promoted from the lower rung.
Sikkim could have snatched a bonus point as well had they not squandered their chances, especially in the second session.
Mizoram’s lower-orders offered some spirited resistance to ensure their team crossed the 101-mark and avoid innings defeat after a top-order collapse left them reeling at 36 for five.
Mizoram were bowled out before lunch for 135, with Sikkim needing to knock off just 35 runs to register their first win of the season.
