Sikkim on path to becoming a strong, self-reliant State: Governor

GANGTOK,: Governor Om Prakash Mathur has extended his warmest greetings and good wishes to the people of Sikkim as the nation celebrates its 79th Independence Day.

This is a day of profound significance for every Indian, a day to pay homage to the countless freedom fighters who, with unyielding courage and ultimate sacrifice, secured for us the most cherished gift of all — the gift of freedom, said the Governor in his message.

“We also pay our deepest tribute to our Armed Forces, whose unwavering courage and commitment safeguard our freedom and security. Their exemplary dedication was once again demonstrated through the resounding success of Operation Sindoor, carried out under the able guidance and direction of the Prime Minister. The precision and decisiveness of this operation have brought immense pride to the nation and elevated India’s stature on the global stage as a symbol of courage and conviction.”

Governor Mathur shared that this year’s Independence Day carries added significance for Sikkim as it marks the Golden Jubilee of Sikkim Statehood. Over the past fifty years, with the steadfast support of the Union Government and the unwavering spirit of our people, Sikkim has emerged as one of India’s most progressive, peaceful, and environmentally conscious States, he said.

He added that Sikkim’s progress has been made possible through a deep and enduring partnership with the Government of India. Flagship national programmes have brought transformative changes to every corner of our State — from the mountains of North Sikkim to the valleys of the South, he said, highlighting several flagship Central initiatives.

Special financial assistance and policy support from the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, NITI Aayog, and Ministries of the Government of India have helped Sikkim realise projects that might otherwise have remained aspirations, added the Governor.

“Today, Sikkim stands as a State that is clean, green, progressive, and inclusive. But our journey is far from over. The vision of Viksit Bharat @2047 calls upon each of us to rise to the challenge of building a nation — and a State — that is strong, self-reliant, and sustainable. Our goal of a ‘Sunaulo, Samriddha, ani Samartha’ Sikkim is not just a slogan; it is a roadmap for inclusive growth, climate resilience, cultural pride, and human development,” said the Governor.

On this Independence Day, we reaffirm our commitment to strengthening governance through innovation, transparency, and accountability, said the Governor.

“We will invest in our youth, empower our women, safeguard our environment, and modernise our infrastructure, ensuring that no citizen is left behind. We will align our policies with the national mission of a Viksit Bharat, knowing that the progress of Sikkim is inseparable from the progress of India,” said the Governor.

Highlighting the developmental strides in many sectors, the Governor shared that with unwavering support from the Government of India, particularly the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the Ministry of Railways, and the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Sikkim has made significant strides in strengthening connectivity within the State and with the rest of the country.

“The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana has transformed rural accessibility, connecting remote villages to markets, healthcare, and education facilities. Road projects under the Border Roads Organisation, funded through central allocations, are not only enhancing mobility but also strengthening strategic infrastructure in sensitive border areas.”

The Governor mentioned that rail connectivity to Sikkim is steadily progressing under the Sivok–Rangpo railway project, funded and executed by Indian Railways. Once completed, this will be a game changer for passenger movement, freight transport, and economic activity, he said.

“Urban infrastructure has been upgraded under schemes like the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) and the Smart Cities Mission, enhancing water supply, sewage systems, public spaces, and green urban transport in Gangtok and other municipalities. Rural electrification under the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana and improved internet connectivity through BharatNet are ensuring that even our most remote communities are part of the digital economy.”

The synergy between central investment and State implementation has created a momentum that is reshaping Sikkim’s physical and digital landscape, making it more accessible, resilient, and future-ready, said the Governor.

“As we hoist our Tricolour today, let it remind us of the sacrifices of those who came before us, and of the responsibilities we bear for those who will follow. Let it inspire us to work with unity of purpose, dedication to service, and faith in our shared future. Together, with the blessings of our people and the guidance of our leaders, we will build a Sikkim that continues to shine as a beacon of harmony, progress, and opportunity — a Sikkim that proudly contributes to the making of a great and prosperous India,” said the Governor in his message.
