GANGTOK,: Sikkim’s domestic season started Sunday with Lt Vinod Pradhan Memorial Trophy, a new T20 tournament organised by Sikkim Cricket Association as a tribute to its former president Vinod Pradhan.
Late Vinod Pradhan was the president of Sikkim Cricket Association from 1994-95 until his untimely demise in 2002. Under his stewardship, Sikkim cricket hosted national tournaments like Vijay Merchant Trophy and Cooch Behar Trophy for the first time in 1996-97, marking Sikkim’s entry to national cricketing stage.
The establishment of Mining Ground as the home ground for cricket in Sikkim also owes much to his leadership and initiatives.
Sikkim Cricket Association, in a press release, said, “In commemoration of Mr. Pradhan’s enduring legacy, the Sikkim Cricket Association is honoured to organise the Lt Vinod Pradhan Memorial Trophy. The tournament not only celebrates his contributions to cricket in Sikkim but also provides a platform for local cricketers to showcase their talent and passion for the sport.”
The Pradhan family thanked Sikkim Cricket Association for organizing the tournament in his honour.
Dr. Sumita Pradhan, his wife, expressed her joy and appreciation for the recognition bestowed upon her late husband, emphasizing his deep-rooted love for cricket. “Though my late husband wore many hats, his passion for cricket was unparalleled. From playing cricket from his school days to his role as a cricket administrator, cricket was his true love. Even during his last days, he was vigorously involved in cricket activities,” said Dr. Sumita, who was the chief guest for the opening day.
Vinod’s brother Mani Pradhan remarked, “This tribute from Sikkim Cricket Association is a cherished gift for our family.”
The inaugural edition of the tournament features top-eight teams in the State – Alpine Sporting Club, Black Eagles (SAP), Cricket Association of Tathangchen, Irises Cricket Club, Jorethang Brothers Cricket Club, Pakyong XI, Royal Daragaon Cricket Club, and Royal North Brothers – divided into two groups.
Each team will play three matches in the group stage with the top two teams from each group progressing to the semi-finals. The final will take place on March 13.
In the opening match, Pakyong XI defeated Royal North Brothers by 32 runs. After posting 149 for six in 20 overs, Pakyong XI restricted Royal North Brothers to 117/9 for a comfortable win.
Likewise, Alpine Sporting Club overcame a top-order wobble to beat Cricket Association of Tathangchen by four wickets in a low scoring thriller in the afternoon.
