Two deaths in separate road mishaps

GANGTOK,: A 15-year-old girl lost her life and four other teenagers were injured when their private vehicle was allegedly hit by a State government vehicle on Friday evening on Sochakgang Road, Lower Sichey here.

Gangtok police have arrested the driver of the government vehicle.

As per the complaint to Gangtok Sadar police station, it is alleged that the government vehicle was travelling at high speed from the opposite direction when it crashed into the ill-fated private vehicle. The crash resulted in the death of the 15-year-old girl, who hailed from Namnang here, and injuries to the other occupants.

The government vehicle was allegedly driven by one Amit Pradhan, 34, who was arrested by Gangtok Sadar police. A case under various sections of BNS 2023 has been registered against the accused driver and the case is under investigation.

All the five occupants in the private vehicle were teenagers from Gangtok and the vehicle was also been driven by a 16-year-old boy, as per the police report.

Meanwhile, a 45-year-old man was killed when his vehicle fell some 300 ft down from Ringdang Road, Sangkhalang in Mangan district on Friday morning at around 9 am. The deceased was the lone occupant in the vehicle. He was evacuated and taken to nearby Mangan hospital where he later succumbed to his head injuries, police informed.

The deceased was a Nepal citizen but presently staying at Singhik, Mangan district.
