DARJEELING,: At a time when protests are being
organized in different parts of Bengal over the rape and murder of a young
doctor at RG Kar hospital, an all-women police mobile patrolling squad was
flagged off from Dali Police Line here today.
The “pink patrol van” is part of the
safety measures for women initiated by the West Bengal government in different
parts of the State through the police.
North Bengal IG Rajesh Kumar Yadav said,
“The mobile van unit will consist of female police personnel and is mainly
being done for the safety and security of the women folk. They will mostly
concentrate their patrolling in areas like women college and hostels where complaints
of eve teasing, and harassment are often made.”
Yadav said that such initiatives are
being taken in different places. “At present similar pink patrols have already
been started in the districts of Coochbehar and Kalimpong. This is being done
phase wise and we will take similar initiatives in rural areas also in the days
to come. Apart from that, we have also increased security for the women in
places like hospitals and have also installed CCTV cameras in different
places,” he said.
