GANGTOK,: Chennaiyin FC has entered the pre-quarterfinal round of the 40th Governor’s Gold Cup football tournament being organised by Sikkim Football Association (SFA) here at Paljor Stadium.
The Southern club overcame a strong Punjab Police team 3-1 on Monday to make it to the next round where they face Kolkata’s Diamond Harbour FC.
Chennaiyin FC was awarded a penalty in the third minute which was calmly converted by Lalpekhlua to give his side an early lead. Karthik Thirumalai doubled the lead in the 42nd minute but moments before half-time, Punjab Police reduced the deficit through a penalty kick by Abelson.
The second half largely saw Punjab Police making several efforts to find the equalizing goal but was thwarted by poor finishing and one excellent save by Chennaiyin FC goalie Mohanraj K.
Vishal R sealed the victory for Chennaiyin FC in the final minutes.
Speaking to the media, Chennaiyin FC coach Rajan Mani shared that the players felt difficulties in adjusting to the high-altitude and new ground as it was their first match. But they played with character and desire which is the most important thing, he said.
Lalpekhlua was declared the ‘man of match’ for his all-round performance including a goal.
Gangtok zilla adhyaksha Balaram Adhikari was the chief guest with upadhyaksha Devi Maya Pradhan as the guest of honour.
The pre-quarterfinal round commences from Tuesday.
