NAMCHI,: Nagyan Construction, a private company engaged in a NHIDCL highway project here, has taken complete responsibility for proper restoration of the main water supply lines to Namchi. Three main pipes supplying drinking water to the south district headquarters from Bermello source had been damaged near Rabongla bye-pass area recently.
The NHIDCL is expanding the existing road from Singtam, east district to Geyzing, west district through south district. Tunnelling works for the highway by the contractor resulted in a landslide at a sinking area in Rabongla bye-pass area. Around 220 ft of the waterline was affected by the landslide which disrupted daily supply of water to Namchi.
Around 1 million litres of drinking water is required for Namchi daily. Due to disruption, supply of water has been discontinued to almost 80% of the localities in the town for past 15 days.
Nagyan Construction has provided seven tankers to supply drinking water to the Namchi residents and Covid care centres in the town.
Meanwhile, men and machinery has been deployed at the site for early restoration of Namchi water supply pipes by the company. A team of more than 30 workers including engineers and supervisors from the company and PHE department are engaged in the restoration work.
Two smaller pipes (6 inches and 4 inches) were restored the day of the landslide but the third and biggest pipe (10 inches) is yet to be repaired. The team have made four attempts so far to repair the third pipe which passes through Damthang ending at Namchi.
It was informed that a new type of pipes is being considered as it is more durable for supplying a large volume of water through a long distance. These pipes have been ordered from Kolkata to replace the damaged lines.
Nagyan Company PRO Zigmee Namgyal said the company regrets the disruption of water supply to Namchi. The company will restore the pipelines by two weeks, he said.
Namgyal informed that besides replacing and connecting the damaged lines, other works like installing concrete pillars have also to be undertaken.
The company has planned to build permanent water pipes which will provide uninterrupted services after September this year, it was informed.
