GANGTOK,: Eminent writer B.B. Muringla, the torchbearer of the preservation of Limboo language and script, passed away Wednesday at the age of 80.
Muringla had complications after a stroke and was under treatment at STNM Hospital in Gangtok.
Born at Lingchom village, near Geyzing on April 3, 1943, the late writer went on to contribute immensely towards the promotion of Limboo language and literature. He tirelessly served the community for over four decades to build a better understanding about the indigenous faith and culture of Limboo.
Awarded Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, in 2017, Muringla hand-wrote books for primary classes till secondary level when Limboo language was first introduced in Sikkim schools in 1970s, reconstructed the grammar to make it easier for readers and learners of Limboo language, designed Limboo script for letter press and computer, and produced Limboo-Nepali-English and Hindi-Limboo dictionaries.
He authored and translated numerous Limboo books besides penning Limboo and Nepali songs. He is the first Limboo singer/songwriter to record a Limboo song (‘Alla Pichiro’ in 1984).
Born to Late Lall Man Subba and Late Sancha Rani Subba, Muringla did his schooling from Tashi Namgyal Academy and joined Darjeeling’s St. Joseph’s College for higher studies. He served as a text book writer in Education department and retired as additional director.
Chief Minister P.S. Golay condoled the demise of Muringla, describing him as one of the iconic personalities of Sikkim.
“Hailing from Lingchom in West Sikkim, he was one of the eminent writers in Limboo literature and played an instrumental role in promoting and preserving the language and script for which he was accorded with the prestigious Padmashri. Besides his literary works, he was also known as a prolific singer/songwriter and a musician who contributed towards Nepali and Limboo folk music which was broadcasted through Akashvani,” the Chief Minister said in his condolence message.
Golay offered his condolences to the bereaved family and friends.
Lok Sabha member Indra Hang said Muringla’s contributions towards development of Limboo language and literature stands unparalleled.
“His pioneering works have laid the foundation stone for the development of Limboo language to reach the height it has achieved today. I express my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. He left for heavenly abode with indelible mark in the history of Sikkim and the Limboo community from all over the world. May his soul rest in peace,” the MP wrote on Facebook.
Despite enjoying a celebrity status among the Limboo community, Muringla’s lifestyle was simple and modest.
