Gangtok Junior Olympic Games at Paljor Stadium

GANGTOK,: The block-level inter-school Junior Olympic Games for Gangtok block started today at Paljor Stadium here.  The multi-discipline sports event for under-14 and u-17 boys and girls is organised by Sports department and sponsored by Ministry of Sports under the theme ‘Sports for Peace & Development’.
Sikkim Khadi Board chairperson Chung Chung Bhutia declared the event open in the presence of SKM Sports Wing president Rinzing Wangyal and Gangtok CLC president Sanjeev Gurung.
Bhutia congratulated the Sports department for organising the event and thanked the schools for allowing the students to participate.
“Education without sports is nothing. Children should understand the importance of sports as it leads to the holistic development of an individual. Sports will lead you in the right track. Best wishes to all the participants. Give your best. You need not be sports icons right away but you can always engage yourself in any discipline of sports of your choice,” said Bhutia.
Sports teachers play a key role in developing sports and interests among the students therefore their involvement is praiseworthy, she added.
Sports assistant director S.B. Subba informed that the event is being held at block level for the first time. Football started from today while registration for other disciplines will start from tomorrow, he said.
Students from various schools in Gangtok took part in the opening ceremony which included a march past.
