Gyalshing Police arrest notorious criminal ‘Spider Man’ in major theft case

GANGTOK,: In a remarkable breakthrough, the Gyalshing District Police have successfully solved a major theft case involving the theft of gold ornaments and cash worth approximately Rs.16.98 lakh.

The case was registered at Gyalshing Police Station on October 29 following a written complaint from Ram Hang Limboo, a resident of Sardung and presently serving as RTO, Motor Vehicle Division, Gyalshing, informs a press release from Gyalshing SP Nahkul Pradhan on Tuesday.

Acting on the complaint, a case under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023 was registered and taken up for investigation.

During the course of investigation, police arrested one Zigmee Sonam Bhutia of Pelling on November 1 and recovered a substantial portion of the stolen property from his alleged possession.

Based on the accused person’s disclosure, and through sustained intelligence and technical surveillance, a special team led by PI Roshan Gurung, SHO Gyalshing Police Station (Investigating Officer of the case), proceeded to Siliguri.

With the assistance of Pradhan Nagar Police, the team apprehended the main accused, Rakesh Rai alias ‘Spider Man’, from Methibari, Siliguri who was absconding after commission of crime, informed the Gyalshing SP.

The accused Rakesh Rai alias ‘Spider Man’ is a notorious and habitual offender, active during the 1990s, with a long criminal record in Sikkim and nearby regions. He has previously been convicted and sentenced by the courts of Sikkim and Siliguri in several heinous offences.

The arrest of this notorious criminal marks a major success for the Gyalshing District Police and underscores their relentless commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of all citizens, said the Gyalshing SP.
