Contributions of Chemjong should not be forgotten: MP Subba
GEYZING,: The 117th birth anniversary of Limboo litterateur and historian Iman Singh Chemjong was celebrated here at the conference hall of Zilla Panchayat Bhawan on Friday. Yakthung Sapsok Saplon Chumbho Sukhim, a Limboo literary association, had organized the commemorative event.
The Chemjong Jayanti is held annually amidst Limboo literature-based activities. The highlight of the event is the presentation of the prestigious Iman Singh Chemjong Literary Award.
The year, the award was conferred to Aitaman Limboo of Hee Gaon, West Sikkim, while Bharan Dhoj Subba was feted posthumously with Special Chemjong Award.
The virtual competition on story writing, essay and poetry were other highlights of the programme. The winners of literary competitions recited their works at the event. YSSCS also released 11 different books, magazines and periodicals on the occasion.
M.P. Subba, advisor to the State Education department attended the event as the chief guest. In his brief address, Subba, expressed that youth must come forward to preserve, develop and uplift the Limboo language, culture and literature. He said that it was because of the sincere effort, dedication and selfless works of Iman Singh Chemjong for Limboo language and literature, the Limboo community were able to keep alive their distinct cultural heritage in the form of language and literature. He added that contributions of Iman Singh Chemjong in the cultural realms of Limboo community should not be forgotten and his works for upliftment of Limboo language and literature should be an inspiration for new generations.
Subba maintained that community-based literary activities and participations of youth were important to safeguard culture, traditions and language and appreciated YSSCS for working as a frontal organization in Limboo literary arena.
At the event, Limboo scholar Dr. B.L. Khamdak presented a brief life history and literary journey of Iman Singh Chemjong, and awardees Aitaman Limboo and Late Bharan Dhoj Subba.
Aitaman Limboo thanked YSSCS for considering him worth for Iman Singh Chemjong Award 2021 and expressed that for him the award meant an added responsibilities and an encouragement to keep serving the literature.
