NH10 reopens for traffic

DARJEELING, October 26: NH-10, the main land route connecting Sikkim and Kalimpong to Siliguri finally reopened on Tuesday evening for vehicular movement after a weeklong closure.
The route had been closed since October 19 following different landslides along the highway. The landslides were cleared by the next night but another major landslide took place at Birik Dara near Rambi blocking the highway. About 15 to 20 metres of road stretch had caved in at Birik Dara.
PWD Highway officials and their team worked continuously to cut a side of the mountain to restore the road at Birik Dara. The restoration work was completed on Tuesday evening.
With the highway closed till now, vehicles were taking longer alternative routes to bypass the blocked stretch at Birik Dara.
