Nyizang Palmu debuts with ‘Demajong Ghi Phumo’

GANGTOK, : music video of ‘Demajong Ghi Phumo’, the debut single of Nyizang Palmu Bhutia featuring BOsing, was released at an event held in Gangtok on Saturday evening.

"Demajong" is the ancient name of Sikkim, and "Phumo" means a girl or daughter in ‘Lhokey’, the Sikkimese Bhutia dialect. ‘Demajong Ghi Phumo’ translates to ‘Daughter of Sikkim’.

The song is an ode to all daughters of Sikkim, with feel-good lyrics that express how it is a blessing to be a Demajong Ghi Phumo, growing up with the love and kindness of one's parents and the blessings of Ugyen/Guru Rinpoche.

The single is available on various streaming platforms, including DistroKid, iTunes, Spotify, and YouTube.

Nyizang, who hails from Gangtok, is the proud daughter of Gary Chopel Bhutia and Sonam Yankeela. She is a student at Tashi Namgyal Academy.

The event was attended by Bermiok Yab Thinley Densapa, Nyizang’s family, friends, well-wishers, teachers from Tashi Namgyal Academy, and members of TNAAA.

Gary Chopel spoke about the making of the project.

“Nyizang is an exceptionally talented singer, and we are all gathered here to support her dream. Many years ago, she covered a song that received a positive response. ‘Demajong Ghi Phumo’ is a modern Lhokey song infused with English, hip-hop, and art. Late singer Mellow Gyatso was initially supposed to be part of the project (at that time, it was untitled) but while working on the melody, he sadly left us too soon. Later, my father encouraged me to take the project forward, and my wife Yankeela suggested that BOsing be part of it. After a few sessions with BOsing and inspiration from Khenpola’s narration, the soul of the poetry was formed, and the song Demajong Ghi Phumo was born. Many people contributed to this project, and we are grateful to them,” said Gary.

He expressed that their family wants to support Nyizang’s dreams, allowing her to pursue any passion she chooses in the future.

Nyizang expressed that the project was a fun journey and thanked everyone, especially her grandparents and parents, for their love and support.

The evening also featured a live performance of Demajong ghi Phumo by Nyizang and BOsing, along with a solo performance by Nyizang.

Yab Thinley Densapa felicitated the project’s team.

The music video was shot at multiple locations, including Nyizang’s Jam Pad, Lukshyama, Tashi Namgyal Academy, Wellness Park, Park Central Café, and Kyitchu Gyatsal.
