Rajeev Masand shares industry insights at SIFF, stresses talent nurturing and authentic stories

GANGTOK, (IPR): The third day of the Sikkim International Film Festival concluded with a session on “Building Talents and Markets from Northeast India” by Rajeev Masand, COO of Dharma Cornerstone Artists Agency,a prominent Indian talent management firm, at Chintan Bhawan today.

The session was moderated by Creative Eco Forum founder Supriya Suri.

During the session, Masand reflected on his journey as a film critic and shared his experience of closely observing the evolution of Indian cinema over the years. Drawing from his professional journey, he offered valuable insights into the changing dynamics of the film industry and the growing importance of identifying and nurturing fresh talent.

He highlighted the need for proper points of contact and support systems for upcoming artists, stating that young talents require access to the right platforms, guidance and professional networks in order to grow in the industry. In this regard, he also spoke on the important role played by casting directors and talent agencies in connecting emerging artists with opportunities and helping them navigate the professional landscape of cinema.

Masand further elaborated on the significance of authenticity in filmmaking and discussed the balance between star value and meaningful storytelling. He also stressed the vital contribution of writers and directors, noting that strong scripts and creative vision remain central to the success of any film.

Emphasising the need for greater variety in storytelling, he encouraged filmmakers to explore diverse themes and narratives that reflect the realities and experiences of different regions and communities.

Masand also highlighted the importance of discovering personal and rooted stories from different parts of India, stating that such narratives have the power to enrich Indian cinema and connect with audiences across boundaries.

The session proved to be insightful and engaging, and witnessed active participation from delegates, aspiring filmmakers, students and cinema enthusiasts attending the festival.

Masand later walked the red carpet at West Point Mall, where the films are being screened. Addressing reporters, he commended the festival’s curation and noted the increasing audience appetite for content-driven films. He remarked that platforms such as SIFF play a crucial role in bridging filmmakers and audiences seeking substantive storytelling.

Malayalam film actress Bhavana Menon, whose film “Anomie” also was screened at the festival, underlined the importance of film festivals like SIFF in promoting meaningful cinema and providing space for diverse narratives.
