SDF seeks clarification from SPSC regarding SI results controversy

GANGTOK,: The Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) on Friday submitted a memorandum to the Sikkim Public Service Commission (SPSC) Controller of Examination here seeking clarification amidst social media backlash over the recently declared results of Sub Inspectors (SI) in the Sikkim Police. The SDF demanded publication of the SI recruitment results (both written and physical).

“A delegation from the SDF party came to the SPSC office today regarding the recent SI recruitment results. All over the State, people have been talking about nepotism. The impact on the result is due to political pressure, is what people are saying. We are here for clarification and met the Controller of Examination. The chairman was not even in office when this crucial topic needed to be addressed. The secretary too did not meet us. The SDF party, on behalf of the Sikkimese youth and janta, says that majority of those who appeared for the SI examination have faced unfairness. We heard that the process of examination was not fair, and many of them contacted us regarding this, so we are here to address this issue,” expressed Cheli Morcha in-charge Komal Chamling.

“When we first arrived, the gates of the SPSC office were closed. They were prepared beforehand and the police were also ready for us. Seeing this, we are suspicious. Something is not right, as they were in a defensive mood. Yesterday, Minister Puran Gurung gave a clarification in a defensive mode. We are doubtful something is not right, she added.

“We asked many questions to the Controller of Examination. Our demand, as it is an issue where the public are dissatisfied and it being a special circumstance, is that all candidates who appeared for the examination; their results should be published, written and physical both. This clarification should be given publicly. An application was also submitted. The SPSC has assured that the SPSC chairman would return on December 5 and would reply to us then,” said Komal to the media, outside the SPSC office.

“It is about trust and mistrust in a public institution. As a responsible opposition party, we are here to question the ruling government. The allegations are not just from one medium but multiple. As a responsible institution, SPSC is bound to give a public clarification,” demanded Komal.

SDF spokesperson Arun Limboo said, “Students, after completing their education, dream of a job. In Sikkim, the Chief Minister before the election had said, ‘Keep the SKM slogans alive for two months and you will become an inspector.’ He never said there would be an interview. SPSC is one of the highest examinations, and the result should have been on a merit list. But as the CM said about the SI examinations, the candidates’ photos you see on social media. Today, most are carrying flags of the ruling SKM party. As per our demands, SPSC has accepted to give clarification, and we are waiting for the clarification, as SI is an important post. As per the clarification by SPSC, we will act accordingly.”

We are not blaming all candidates who appeared for the examination, but only some, concluded Arun.
