GANGTOK,: The SDF women’s wing delegation on Friday met Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at Raj Bhawan and submitted a memorandum regarding the increase in crimes against women and children in Sikkim. They also urged the Governor for maintaining law and order and sought his intervention with respect to child and women welfare commissions.
As per the SDF women’s wing, the Governor gave a patient hearing to their grievances and demands. The Governor informed us that he has already initiated action for improvement of law and order, and assured to take steps regarding our other demands, said the SDF women’s wing.
Speaking with media, SDF spokesperson Bandana Sharma said: “We met the Governor considering the increasing crimes against children and women in the State including the recent heinous murder of the 11-year-old girl. Our concerns were also the missing reports of girl child in the State.”
The 12-member delegation also submitted a memorandum to the Governor requesting his intervention to reduce such crimes in Sikkim, said Sharma. She added that POCSO cases are also happening regularly and there needs to be a strong vigilance to tackling such crimes.
Sharma stressed that death penalty must be given to those found guilty for sexually assaulting and murdering the 11-year-old girl child. A strong message needs to be given out so that no one can even think of carrying out such grave crimes in future, she said.
The SDF women’s wing has requested the police to increase patrolling along Tashi View Point, Pangthang area and the road leading to North Sikkim. They have also urged the people to stay vigilant so they can extend assistance in stopping criminal activities.
