GANGTOK,: The Sikkim High Court Bar Association (SHCBA) was formed with the executive committee members also appointed after a general body meeting on Friday here.
Additional advocate general Dr. Doma T. Bhutia was elected as the SHCBA president along with 12 executive members. Senior advocate Rajendra Upreti was nominated as the association advisor.
Speaking to media, the SHCBA president spoke on the need for forming the association. “It was felt that advocates practising at various courts in Sikkim, especially the High Court of Sikkim, should associate together for meeting their common aspirations and for their welfare and development. The association has been formed in this regard and also to strengthen the institutions in Sikkim towards rule of law and administration of justice. It also aims to support all citizens in pursuit of justice,” she said.
Dr. Doma added that the SHCBA aims to support and encourage legal profession in Sikkim besides promoting cooperation among all legal practitioners. The association would also coordinate with advocates practising in Sikkim, other bar associations in the State and across the nation, she said.
The SHCBA president said the association would be holding seminars and conferences to promote and maintain high standard of profession among the members of the bar along with professional values and ethics. There are many undeserved views regarding the legal practitioners among the people which needs to be corrected and we will work to generate public awareness, she said.
The new executive body of SHBCA has a term of two years followed by annual elections. The membership drive will commence after the winter vacation of the High Court of Sikkim ends.
It was informed that there are more than 300 practising advocates in the High Court of Sikkim.
