DICHEN ONGMU

GANGTOK,: Sikkim police has traced and nabbed a Chapra-resident for allegedly murdering his girlfriend at a Gangtok hotel in December end last year.
Kumar Ghanshyam Singh, the accused, was arrested from his native village in Chapra district on January 31.
The arrest came after a rigorous effort made by a Gangtok Sadar police station team headed by SI Shekhar Basnett and PSI Suman Pokhrel with assistance from Bihar Police.
The 32-year-old accused had checked in a local hotel at Gangtok on December 27 with the 34-year-old victim.
Sharing details about the investigation and arrest to media on Wednesday, SP (east) Siva Prasad Yellasari informed that the accused and the victim had an extramarital affair for past three years. The victim was married to another person and was a mother of two children.
Yellasari added that, during interrogation, the accused admitted that he and his girlfriend had a scuffle on the night of December 27 in their hotel room in Gangtok. The dispute arose after the victim caught the accused in touch with other women.
“Both were in a drunken state wherein the victim got injured below her abdomen area during the scuffle. It was only the next morning when the accused realised that the victim had succumbed to her abdomen injuries the previous night itself. Out of panic the accused packed his belongings, locked the room from outside and fled from the spot,” said the SP (east).
Gangtok Sadar Police were informed about the locked room by the hotel staff on December 30. This lead to the discovery of the woman’s body and investigations commenced.
The investigation officers tracked the family members and friends of the accused Kumar Ghanshyam Singh through the Aadhar card and phone number collected during the investigation. They made persistent efforts and reached out all places in Bihar where the accused may be hiding.
The case difficult was to crack as the accused was technologically sound and tried his best to escape from police, said the SP (east).
The Sikkim Police team with assistance from Bihar Police conducted raids in different places from January 3 to 12. The accused was finally found hiding in a village and arrested.
Kumar Ghanshyam Singh is under police remand for 14 days and is booked for murder under IPC sections 302 and 201.
The SP (east) congratulated the investigating team of Gangtok Sadar PS for this major breakthrough. He also thanked Bihar Police and Chapra district police for their support and co-operation.
