GEYZING, December 14: Mercury dipped in West Sikkim as many high altitude areas of western region witnessed heavy to moderate snowfall in the last 12 hours. Several areas in the upper reaches were draped in white after snowfall.

It was reported that high altitude places along Indo-Nepal border such as Chewa Bhanjyang, Phoktey Dara, Kalijhar, Torifuley and Achaley received massive snowfall on Thursday and Friday.

Similarly, popular tourist places of West Sikkim - Okhrey, Barsey, Hiley, Ribdi and Bharyang were covered in thick snow due to continuous snowfall since Friday night.

Rainfall of Saturday in various parts of West Sikkim has also contributed to dip in temperature even in the low lying areas like Legship, Reshi and Jorethang witnessed cold weather.

A resident of Okhrey informed that the fresh snowfall in Okhrey and other adjoining areas has affected weather and mercury has plunged down severely turning the places extremely cold. He shared that it was an off season and despite of heavy snowfall in many tourist hotspots of Barsey range, apart from local tourist, the presence of visitors from outside the State was very low. He expressed that inflow of local visitors is expected to be increase if snowfall continues in the region.
