GANGTOK,: State BJP has expressed its strong objection to the proposed Ed
Sheeran concert being planned by the State government during the 50th
Statehood Day celebrations of Sikkim this May.
“The
entire crux & meaning of Statehood day is lost in the process of
unnecessary showbiz and extravaganza. Instead of focusing on “Shape of you” by
Ed Sheeran, the government should focus on the shape & scenario of Sikkim
& take timely measures to elevate our Statehood!” said the State BJP in a
Thursday press statement.
Recording
that it strongly opposes the Ed Sheeran concert idea, the State BJP said this decision
has highlighted a troubling trend of extravagance in government spending, where
public distraction is prioritized over essential needs. Despite being 50 years
since the merger, Sikkim continues to struggle under a heavy debt burden,
failing to meet basic obligations such as salaries, contractor payments, and
scholarships, said the State BJP.
“The State's
inadequate health and education facilities are a pressing concern, and it's
surprising that the government is not leveraging this milestone as an
opportunity to reflect on the State's progress and development. Instead, it
seems intent on diverting attention from these issues with an extravagant
performance. This raises serious questions about the government's vision for
the future and its commitment to addressing the critical needs of the
community,” said the State BJP.
The State
BJP stressed that employment is a significant issue in Sikkim, with many large
unemployed youths struggling to find opportunities. “The lack of good
infrastructure, such as roads, hospitals, and education facilities, is a major
obstacle to development. The State needs to focus on stopping leakages of
revenue, ensuring timely payment of salaries, contractor payments, and
scholarships, as well as providing health reimbursement to the poor and other
essential payments,” said the party.
“The
celebration of Sikkim’s 50th Statehood Day should be a time for reflection and
planning for the future, not an extravagant performance that obscures ongoing
challenges. By prioritizing the needs of the community and focusing on
sustainable growth and development, Sikkim can work towards a brighter future
for all its citizens,” said the State BJP.
