Ugen Gurung wins taekwondo gold in South Korea

GANGTOK,: Martial arts player Ugen Gurung from Sikkim has won a gold medal for India in the 16th World Taekwondo Culture Expo 2023 held at Muju, Jeollabuk-do, South Korea from August 17 to 22.

Ugen won the gold medal in the first senior u-30 male individual poomsae event defeating his South Korean opponent in the final, a press release informs.

I am very proud and happy to have represented India in this event and was able to win gold medal for India in the 16th World Taekwondo Culture Expo 2023, said Ugen.

Ugen has been training under prominent taekwondo player Trilok Subba (Sikkim Amateur Taekwondo Association general secretary) since his childhood. Without his guidance, it would not have been possible for me to win in such an international stage, said Ugen.

Ugen also thanked his co-sponsors Elimit Rai, Hermon Tenzing Namchyo and Sonam Barfungpa for their support.

I would also like to thank my family, friends and the SATA family who have always supported and encouraged me, said Ugen.
